Class Descriptions


Level 1: Learn To Fence

Our entry level class. Learn the basics of the exciting sport of fencing while you develop strength, balance and agility.  We provide the equipment, you bring your sense of adventure! Students will continue at this level for at least two terms before being considered for Level 2 classes.

USA Fencing Membership Required (non-competitive ok) WFC membership not required for Level 1 classes.

Youth Age 8-13
Adult Age 13+


Level 2: Skills
Skill development for students who have successfully completed Learn To Fence (or equivalent).  A variety
of technical skills will be covered each term.  Participants are encouraged to participate in our in-house competitions.

USA Fencing Membership Required (non-competitive ok) WFC membership not required for Level 2 classes.

To move from Level 1, Learn to Fence,  to Level 2, Skills, student will:

  • Have completed at least two terms of Learn to Fence

  • Be able to execute the seven basic footwork actions plus check steps

  • Be able to execute a simple attack with lunge and an indirect attack with lunge 

  • Be able to do basic drills with a coach or experienced fencer

  • Know and be able to execute parry four and parry six

  • Know and be able to execute beats

  • Know basic yellow card offenses (turning back, covering target)

  • Be able to name the three weapons and their target area

  • Understand basic strip rules (on guard line, stepping off side and rear of strip)

  • Able to start and stop a bout as referee with basic hand signals

  • Able to fence a bout safely with and without a referee

  • Able to suit up on own (help with zipper ok).

  • Understand and demonstrate good sportsmanship and fencing etiquette (salute, hand shake or blade tap, thank you).

  • Follow the instructions of the coach and be able to pay attention

  • Able to manage the physical demands of the class

Youth Age 8-13
Adult Age 13+


Level 3: Competitive Training (Teen/Adult Foil, Epee, Sabre)

Designed for experience fencers who have demonstrated their commitment to improving their competitive skills and who have achieved a basic level of technical mastery. Competitive Training fencers should fence two or more times per week, take private lessons on a regular basis, and participate in our in-house competitions.  Coaches' approval is necessary for the competitive level. 

USA Fencing Membership (Access or Competitive) is required.  WFC Membership is required for Level 3 classes.

In order to move from Level 2, Skills, to Level 3, competitive, student will:

      • Show continuing improvement of basic and complex skills

      • Be able to do drills with other fencers

      • Demonstrate good sportsmanship
      • Have participated in at least one in-house event

      • Be able to do drills with movement

      • Demonstrate hard work

      • Is able to manage the physical and emotional demands of competition

      • Be taking regular individual lessons

      • Be ready to participate in in-house and local competitions
      • Have an access or competitive USFA Membership

      • Be a member of the Worcester Fencing Club

Designed for experience Youth Fencers who are ready to take the next step, students enrolled in Level 3 will be actively working to improve their performance in competitive situations, whether bouting at the club or attending competitions.
